Im not concerned. The P-50 was never going to fly off the shelves from the launch date. While DM has the most accessible binder jetting offerings, the P-50 is not a drop-in solution for anyone, its the apex offering for those who have fully mastered and outgrown binder jetting at smaller scale. IMO, unit numbers this quarter or even this year are not a good bellwether for the success of the machine this decade. Look at Everett Rogers Diffusion of Innovation. This is the first phase of an adoption s-curve. I can understand why DM is not forthcoming with delivery numbers this early as the implications would be misunderstood.

The P-50 is a large financial investment that also requires new process knowledge and development to work out the kinks before streamlining mass serial production. Speaking from experience with a large manufacturer, these sort of productivity investments are business-case driven, and are intolerant to large degrees of risk and uncertainty.

The P-1 system exists for that reason. Its a smaller investment that serves as a gateway to the P-50. Companies can prove out use-cases and new workflows, verify material properties, and start using it for small serial production to build the confidence and technical skillset prerequisite to the P-50. Remember its not just printing, its also de-powdering, sintering, post processing, designing for additive, understanding the capabilities and limitations of the equipment, etc. While Desktop Metal offers the most accessible metal binder jetting products there is still a learning curve.

We know at least the following companies are using the P-1: Ford Motor Co., Indo-MIM, Formula 3D Corporation, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), and Cetim, the Technical Centre for Mechanical Industry in France. We know the Shop System has been the best-selling metal binder jetting system on the market. These are gateways to the P-50.

The bottom line for me, dont focus on early unit numbers. Focus on how early adopters are leveraging the technology, what it enables and what barriers remain, and how is DM responding with developments to remove those barriers. A judicial approach is the right one.
